Kindergarten students must know 40 words by the end of kindergarten as a minimum. If your kindergarten student masters these, please begin working on the first grade lists. Note that the first two 1st grade lists are the same as the kindergarten lists so once your child has mastered their Kindergarten words, they can begin working on 1st grade list 3.
First-grade students who easily recognize and read the 284 sight words are typically on or above grade level by the end of the school year. There are a total of 14 lists with about 20 words per list. Please work with your students a little each night to help keep them moving through the lists. Making flashcards and just adding in a few new ones at a time is best.
