Laptop & iPad Update Schedule

Due to the constantly changing internet content, software upgrades and security patches it is necessary to implement an upgrade/maintenance  schedule for teacher laptop computers and iPads.

Ipad Tricks
With several staff members carrying around one of these new tools for education I though I would put out some quick tricks about the iPad! Look for more in the weeks to come as well as other valuable information.

Keynote Day 3
Posted 2/13/2013 at 9:38:41 AM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
Well, first session was amazing on the flipped classroom. Now if I could get some of our teachers to try it! Maybe that will be my goal for next school year. To help a teacher or teachers flip their classroom. The next few posts will be short as battery life is waning. (Forgot to plug in last night) so I took the blurb from the schedule for the keynote. I have heard him speak before and he is amazing. Perhaps with online courses college will be free in the future! Yeah right money always drives everything. But just maybe.... Coursera partners with top universities to offer high quality courses online, free for anyone to take. This talk will describe MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), and how they are making courses taught by the best professors at the best universities freely available to millions, as well as how they are being used to transform the on-campus education of students enrolled in brick-and-mortar universities. Speakers Andrew Ng Director @ Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab Bio: Andrew Ng is a Co-founder of Coursera, and a Computer Science faculty member at Stanford. He is also the Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Flip It: You, Your class, Your Students
Posted 2/13/2013 at 7:51:12 AM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
Flipping the classroom is a new emerging teaching method that is gaining ground. Buckeye Local Schools has two math teachers who have made the flip. Giving students the ability to control their learning. Last year at this conference I saw only a couple of sessions on this topic. This year there has been 4 times that amount. Is this gaining ground? I know it would have been cool to have been taught this way.

Class Dojo behavior management system
Posted 2/12/2013 at 2:19:01 PM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
This looked different and interesting. Here is a blurb. Just google it to find their site. If you are sick of changing colors, pulling cards or just want to try something new in your classroom, this is for you. The class dojo is a free service that monitors behavior in a fun and amazingly easy way. The program is web-based, can be used with or without a smart board, and even has a smartphone component. This management component is one of the neatest things I've seen used in the classroom in years.

Just finished this session. The topic of discussion; online assessments. Discussion points include; two twenty day testing windows, technology readiness tool, teacher preparation, students being brought up to speed and aligned with the Ohio common core technology standards, and of course who is going to fund all the changes. This was heated and everyone is on edge and frustrated.

This goes out to Ms. Poston-Peters at the HS. Way cool video production. Here is the link and the blurb. Video Productions and Coordinator of an educational TV station for North Canton City Schools, I work with dozens of video files each week. Recently we found US Education TV http://www.useducationtv.com/corp/. This free service works with schools to create and host online and live streaming channels. The service will also assist with the development of marketing and advertising strategies to create a long term sustainable flow of revenue. A great way to pay for those gadgets. CHECK IT OUT!

Keynote 2
Posted 2/12/2013 at 9:33:47 AM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
Ok, I admit I am a people watcher. I am not a social person. As I sit and wait for the keynote to begin I glance around me. What do I see? iPad, iPad, iPad, and more iPads. Oh wait there is an older women close to me. She has an iPad on her lap but she just tucked away a small paper, yes paper notebook with a pencil. No not a stylus but a pencil. The one you use a pencil sharpener to make sure you have lead to write. I think this is funny. It was not so long ago I myself sat in this very room with a notebook full of paper and a pencil. How times change in such a short time. Although the coffee cups are still prevalent amongst the attendees. Oh wait, she just pulled the paper note pad back out.....

Keynote Show & Tell, It's not just for 2nd Grade...
Posted 2/12/2013 at 9:15:29 AM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
Keynote getting ready to start. A short blurb on the keynote copied from the online schedule. Should be an interesting session. Show & Tell” used to be just an activity for elementary students. However, with so many new digital tools available, Show & Tell has actually become an integral part of everyday life (unless you're coming from a trip to Vegas). Students and teachers have ways to express their personal curiosity, interest and abilities like never before. Let’s explore some of the ways these new tools and resources are impacting teaching and learning in the digital age. Speakers Max Brooks Discovery Max is a life-long learner/sharer who pulls inspiration from all things 'techucational'…like robotics, making movies, and proving what learners know through eportfolios. …

You can check out their web page from the sessions at http://ohlsd.org/portfolio/LONGetech/ their web site is also very cool as they incorporate google docs on their site to collect emergency information from new students through their site. Now a quick break before the keynote.

Good morning to everyone who is tagging along with me through this conference. First session getting ready to start. This is a look at google apps. The online word processing, spreadsheet collaboration app made by google. I am very interested in seeing where our student stay be able to use this along with teachers for projects. Moving away from the traditional Microsoft word located on the actual computer to this online tool that students and staff can reach their documents anywhere at any time as long as they have a computer.

Well tried to get one more session in but the presenter didn't show. Too bad. I was hoping to learn more ways to turn iPads and iPhones into clickers. Perhaps it was meant to be. My brain is officially mush! I am signing off for today. So until tomorrow....

Day 1 - Ending post for a long day.
Posted 2/11/2013 at 7:02:13 PM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
I had a chance to sift through my haul from the exhibitors. Lots of very good information. I will just list a few that caught my eye that we as a district should take a closer look.
  • VING, this classroom communicator is totally awesome! If you had even one thought of flipping your classroom this is a great tool. It offers parent communications, mobile learning activities and interactive assignments. Great for kids who are absent for several days. Check it out at www.via680.com
  • Ohio Online Assessments, I attended a couple of sessions where this was discussed. The PARCC tests coming in 2014-2015. I am learning more and will share with the administrators a few details about what I learned to prepare our district on the technology side.
  • Dreambox, this is an online tool for struggling math students. It works at a pace set by the student and progresses them. So for classrooms with students who are a bit behind this can help move them forward. I am not sure what our math scores look like but this may be worth a second look. www.dreambox.com
  • Practical Solutions for Educators, we already use their IEP software but they offer so much more especially for the iPad. Student folio's, Observations, and test taker. www.psfe.com
  • Scholastic, they have a bunch of free tools for educators. This includes daily starter writing prompts, one stop learning activities, whiteboard activities and resources to integrate children's literature into your lessons. scholastic.com
  • For you science gurus, Pasco has items that can equip your iPads with sensor based technology. This includes data collection, display and analysis software that runs right on the iPad. Really cool. I experimented with a wind speed sensor and was able to graph data real time, extract it and make a report in about 3 minutes. Nice!
  • Lastly, iLearnohio, this is a new state of ohio platform that delivers content to Ohio students. It will offer both free and premium content. It also includes a learning management system. I will be attending a session tomorrow to check it out more closely.
All in all a very good day with lots of good information. See you in the morning!

Later this evening after I have sifted through all my stuff from the exhibit hall I will post a brief on what goodies I have found. Lots of online programs for struggling math students and some cool projectors and interactive white boards. The TEC crew sends their hello's to the staff. If anyone is having issues with the education connection please let me know and I will pass on your comments. Nothing like talking with a live person. Just a reminder to checkout the eTech conference web site http://etech.ohio.gov and click on the conference link. Check out the sessions and let me know if something interests you. Give me some lead time and I will try to catch the session or get with the presenter for more info.

A library with now print books! Everything is done using eBooks. BYOD is being implemented so that students know how to borrow eBooks from public library. Preparing for college as these institutions migrate to this type of service. Very cool!

Using Pandora to setup different channels depending on the activity the students are doing. When you start an activity you can select the appropriate channel for music to be played while the students work. Interesting concept.

Keynote - Facing a Future of K-12 Blended Learning
Posted 2/11/2013 at 9:24:34 AM by Veronica Cassidy [staff member]
A few notes on the keynote. The time is NOW for a change! Millions of students are participating in online learning, and the rate is quickly accelerating as more schools “blend” online learning into brick-and-mortar classrooms. The pattern of disruptive innovation is clearly at work. Just as disruptive innovations have transformed countless other industries, education is undergoing a revolutionary shift. New classroom models like Flex, Flipped Classroom, and Individual Rotation are changing the way teachers teach and students learn. They are increasing access, redefining success, and accelerating a more modular, customized system. Some of the new models are on a trajectory to eventually replace the traditional classroom architecture. Education leaders and teachers face a world of new possibilities as they help to shape and channel the innovation of blended learning to its highest potential. Checkout the attached image from the keynote. We are rocking out to Lebanon HS band! They are amazing.
