Tecumseh Develops Reading Achievement Plan
Recently, a team of building and district-level administrators and K-3 teachers developed a district Reading Achievement Plan to improve K-3 literacy in the district.

Improved reading skills at an early age will better prepare students for future academic success. The team analyzed assessment data and identified areas of focus to improve student literacy levels.

A new K-5 reading curriculum has been adopted, and professional development opportunities have been and are being offered to teachers on the multiple elements of the program. The teachers have worked hard to implement the new series to enhance student success.

Writing improvement is an important priority, and the new curriculum offers numerous opportunities to develop writing skills. Along with the writing strategies utilized within the curriculum, additional writing strategies will be implemented as a result of the Reading Achievement Plan.

The Reading Plan also defines a need to reexamine the targeted interventions available for students who have reading and writing deficits. Personnel will review existing reading and writing interventions for effectiveness and determine additional interventions that need to be incorporated into the literacy program. Teachers will have opportunities for professional development on successful interventions. District personnel are confident these combined efforts will result in improved literacy skills evidenced by improved scores on district and state assessments.
