TMS Selected to Pilot New Life Skills Program

Tecumseh Middle School is a pilot school for the evidence-based Botvin LikeSkills Training for 6th grade students through the Adolescent Skills class.

Tecumseh Middle School is a pilot school for the evidence-based Botvin LikeSkills Training for 6th grade students through the Adolescent Skills class. Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) is a research-validated substance abuse prevention program proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors. This comprehensive and exciting program provides adolescents and young teens with the confidence and skills necessary to successfully handle challenging situations. Tecumseh Middle School has worked closely with Family and Children First Council Executive Director Leslie Crew to secure grant funding for this program. The Botvin program costs about $2,600 and will be paid for through grants from the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Clark, Greene and Madison Counties, the Community Health Foundation and United Way.
The program will not replace DARE but rather will be an additional tool to help our students lead successful, positive lives. Mrs. Thomas, the teacher, will be working with students to teach necessary skills to resist social and peer pressures to smoke, drink, and use drugs, to help students to develop greater self-esteem and self-confidence, to enable students to effectively cope with anxiety, to increase their knowledge of the immediate consequences of substance abuse and to enhance cognitive and behavioral competency to reduce and prevent a variety of health risk behaviors.
The goal of the Botvin program is to impact students in 6th grade during 2017-18, then adding 7th grade during 2018-19 and finishing by having the program available to all 6-8 students by 2019-20.
