From the Superintendent's Desk: Resolve to Get Involved

The arrival of a new year often inspires us to adopt resolutions to improve our daily routines or our health.  All resolutions are good, and I hope you are able to continue yours for the foreseeable future!  While diet and exercise are important resolutions to consider, I’d like to encourage parents/guardians to resolve to become more involved in the education of your children.

From the Superintendent’s Desk:

The arrival of a new year often inspires us to adopt resolutions to improve our daily routines or our health.  All resolutions are good, and I hope you are able to continue yours for the foreseeable future!  While diet and exercise are important resolutions to consider, I’d like to encourage parents/guardians to resolve to become more involved in the education of your children.

Research indicates that the children of involved parents/guardians are more successful in school than the children of parents/guardians who are not involved.  How can you be more involved in the education of your children?  Engage your children in conversation about school.  Ask them how they are doing and what they are learning.  Please note that it may take some prodding to get past the one word responses of “fine” and “nothing.”  Even though it may not seem to be the case, children DO want their parents/guardians to care about their school experiences and how they are doing in school.

Make plans to attend all Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences when they are offered.  If you can’t attend, schedule appointments to meet with teachers at other times.  Communicate with teachers via email, text or telephone.  Attend the activities in which your children are involved.  Read all written communication sent by teachers and administrators.  Review the school’s (and the district’s) website to stay abreast of news and scheduled events.

Education is a shared activity.  If you are directly involved, your children will sense that being successful in school is important.  Hopefully, that, in turn, will improve the effort of your children in all areas related to their education.  It’s not always easy to be actively involved in the education of your children, but if you are, there is a good chance that your involvement will lead to an increased focus on being successful from your children.  I hope that you and your family have a prosperous 2018!

Please consider adding your email address to the “E Newsletter” link on the district’s homepage, and the newsletter will be emailed to you each month.
