Donnelsville Prepares Students for Third Grade Requirements

An important part of 3rd grade at Donnelsville Elementary is ensuring that all students are on target and prepared to meet the requirements of the state-mandated Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

An important part of 3rd grade at Donnelsville Elementary is ensuring that all students are on target and prepared to meet the requirements of the state-mandated Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

As part of the state’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG), students must pass the Ohio State Test in Reading to move on to 4th grade next school year. There are some exceptions to this state mandate.

During the week of October 24-27, the English Language Arts State test will be given to all 3rd graders at Donnelsville. The test will be administered in two 90-minute sessions. This will be an online test much like the NWEA MAPS test students took in early September. This tests skills in reading, writing, and language. Each student is required by the state of Ohio to pass the Reading portion to move on to 4th grade. Students will have more than one opportunity to accomplish this.

Fall test scores will be returned to the district after the new year and shared with parents. If your child passes the Reading portion, they will have met the state requirements to move to 4th grade. If they do not pass, they will be given an opportunity to take an alternative Reading assessment approved by the state in February.

The English Language Arts spring test will happen during the week of April 17-20. This will be the third opportunity for students to meet the Third Grade Guarantee requirements if they have not met them yet (Students will also take a State of Ohio Math test online May 1-4). Every student, even those who passed the fall Reading test, will be required to take the tests in the spring. Spring Reading test results will be returned in June and any student who has still not met the requirements for the TGRG will be have the opportunity to attend summer school where they will have two more chances to meet the TGRG. If they do not pass the tests after summer school, state law requires students to be retained in 3rd grade for the 2018-2019 school year.

Our dedicated teachers and staff are committed to working with families and students to help every student be successful, and works directly with parents to offer interventions for students who need extra support.
