Park Layne Elementary staff members are working hard to implement the district’s new reading achievement plan. As part of this plan, teachers are adjusting their instruction to include more foundational skills at kindergarten and first grade to ensure that all students can build upon these skills moving forward.

Teachers are analyzing student performance on the NWEA Maps assessment as well as on a phonological awareness skills test to find gaps in student reading skills and are then placing students in intervention groups to work on these skills.

Part of the plan includes the implementation of our new Wonders reading program. On Friday, January 26, teachers were provided professional development in regards to the new series. Teachers spent time working in grade level teams mapping out lessons and learning more about the digital resources that are available with this series. In addition to accessing the Lexia Core5 and Raz-Kids programs online, students will now also be able to access the Wonders program both at school and at home.

Teachers will be sharing information with parents about student progress and performance on these important assessments during our parent teacher conference is taking place in early February.  As always, we are focused on improving our instruction and practices to best meet the needs of our Park Layne students.
