Learning For All ~ Whatever It Takes!

New Free Library at Park Layne Shares Love of Reading

Park Layne Elementary has had a wonderful start to the new school year. Students and staff came to school eager to learn and work together August 16 and the year has only gotten better from there.

This school year, the cutoff date for kindergarten entrance changed from September 30 to August 1, as part of a county-wide change. We are already noticing a positive impact from this change with fewer students experiencing issues with separation from parents and students much more ready to follow directions and adapt to their new surroundings.

Have you noticed the beautiful new flowerbed in front of Park Layne with the amazing painted box on a post? You might be wondering just what this great new addition to our school is. Park Layne Elementary has a new Little Free Library, another convenient place in our community where people can share books and a love of reading. The Little Free Library was dedicated after our Open House. We focus on reading, so we wanted to offer this option to our families. Mrs. Stacie Hoenie painted the library and it was dedicated to Miss Maggie Bollar, the children’s librarian at the New Carlisle Public Library, in honor of her commitment to our school and community, and her love of books that she shares with everyone.
The library is for everyone in our community to use. Feel free to take a book, return books to the library, and tell others about this opportunity. If you have books you would like to donate to the library that won’t fit, bring them to the school office and we’ll put them in the library as space allows.

If you share a commitment to literacy and have some extra time, please consider becoming a Reading Buddy at Park Layne. Reading Buddies commit to a minimum of 30 minutes a week to read with our 1st grade students. All volunteers will need to pass a background check and be fingerprinted at the Board of Education office and will be trained before working with students. Please consider becoming a Reading Buddy if you have time, and spread the word to others in our community. We feel this can be a win-win situation for some of our retired community members who may be looking for something worthwhile to fill their time with and for our students to develop positive relationships with community members and better reading skills. We are building a solid reading foundation for our students at Park Layne Elementary!
