New Carlisle Elementary students are learning the importance of speaking up as the school focuses on informing students about how they can make a difference by saying something.
The week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 was designated as “Say Something Week” for New Carlisle Elementary’s 4th and 5th graders. During the week, staff talked to the 4th and 5th grade students about how they can make a difference by saying something.
Each day on the announcements students were given statistics to illustrate the importance of speaking up; for example, up to 80% of the time, people who are planning an act of violence against themselves or others tell someone first. Students were told that anytime they hear something that makes them concerned or uncomfortable they need to “Say Something!” On Thursday, Feb. 2, they took the “Say Something!” pledge, with 455 out of 465 students signing the pledge. We are very proud of our students at NCES for taking this important message seriously and pledging to speak up and say something when the time comes!
