Park Layne has started a running club called ‘CrazyTrainers!’ The goal of the CrazyTrainers program is to encourage a healthy lifestyle and a love of running for students.

All K-1 students run at the beginning of their PE class. Some students also have a chance to run in morning gym if they arrive early. Others will have an opportunity to run during their recess time on Fridays once the weather improves.

Running is an inexpensive way to get active and could be a fun family activity. The running club was funded with a MacGrant that Mrs. Cross, our PE teacher, received in the fall.

Since beginning the club in January, students have run a total of 540 miles. Each student has a scanning card with a barcode that they scan after every lap on the iPad through a program called EZScan. The app will track their mileage throughout the year. Prizes are awarded as incentives to keep logging miles.

As of February, 100 percent of students are participating in this program. Several students have logged at least one mile and earned a “shoe” to hang in the hall. Others have logged 5 miles already and will earn a shoe bag from a program called “Mighty Milers.” Once they reach 8 miles, students will earn a T-shirt from the same program.

At the end of the year, our first graders will get to take home “toe tokens” to represent their miles logged during the semester. Several teachers have also enrolled in the Mighty Milers Program and are busy tracking their own mileage at home and have logged nearly 1300 miles so far this semester. They are receiving awards as well through the Mighty Milers Program, which is a free program offered to schools by New York Road Runners to get students and teachers active by offering incentives for logging miles.
