Gifted Services

Gifted Services

The Board of Education shall ensure that procedures are established to identify all gifted students. The District follows the identification eligibility criteria as specified in R.C. 3324.03 and the Operating Standards for Identifying and Serving Gifted Students as specified in the District Plan.

"Gifted" students perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. Annually, children who are gifted are identified by professionally qualified persons using a variety of assessment procedures. The Board encourages efforts to provide services for the children who are gifted as an integral part of the total kindergarten through grade 12 program.

Specific Gifted Information

Acceleration defined as; early entrance to kindergarten; acceleration in individual subject areas; whole grade acceleration (grade-skipping); and early high school graduation.

Tecumseh Local Schools recognizes that the personal, social, physical, and educational growth of children will vary and that they should be placed in the educational setting most appropriate to their needs at the various stages of their growth. Students, for whom a whole-grade acceleration or individual subject acceleration is considered as an appropriate educational option, will be evaluated by an acceleration evaluation committee using the Board of Education adopted Acceleration Policy.

Students that are accelerated will have a Written Acceleration Plan on file.

If you would like to discuss acceleration for your child, please contact the Director of Special Education at 845-4495.

In accordance with Ohio law, all gifted students who are receiving gifted services in Tecumseh Local School District must have a Written Education Plan (WEP) to guide the services. The WEP acts as an individual student planning document and is a communication tool between students, teachers, and parents. It is used to measure the effectiveness of provided gifted services.

Individual Written Education Plans are written annually by gifted specialists in collaboration with classroom teachers for each student receiving gifted educational services. A WEP conference may be scheduled for parents to review and sign off on the plan. All parents as well as staff members responsible for providing services listed will receive copies of the WEP.

Components of the WEP

A Written Education Plan is developed for every student who is receiving gifted educational services in their identification area(s). The WEP includes the following components:

  • A description of all gifted services in which the student participates
  • Goals for students for each service provided
  • The staff person responsible for ensuring the delivery of services
  • The method to be used to evaluate progress toward each specific goal
  • The process and schedule for reporting progress to parents
  • The deadline for the next review of the WEP

Students and parent(s)/guardian(s) may choose not to take advantage of the gifted services offered by the district based upon the educational setting that best fits the needs of a child. Written permission to decline gifted services must be filed with the school district annually. If you would like to decline the offered services, please complete the form below and return it to Tecumseh School Disitrct.

Gifted specialists and/or the school psychologist using State-approved assessment measures will be administering these assessments. Your written permission is necessary for this screening evaluation to occur. Please sign the form below as verification that you understand the process as stated.
