2014-2015 Kindergarten Update
Several weeks ago, Tecumseh Local Schools decided the
district will be moving to an all-day every-day kindergarten program beginning
next school year. The District feels
this is necessary and the best decision for our students and community. The State adjusted our funding this year and
some funds have been designated as restricted.
The restricted funding we received will be utilized to re-institute all-day
An evaluation of the pros and cons associated with this
move, with the focus being on building utilization and capacity, was
performed. During this evaluation we
focused on the financial impact of the plan.
The district wants to use the restricted funding, but TLS does not want
to burden the district with excess costs in the present and future of Tecumseh
After careful consideration the most appropriate option was
to house our kindergarten and first grade students at Park Layne and move our second
and third grade students to Donnelsville.
Essentially, we will switch the staffing at each of the buildings over
the summer months. This will give us
enough space to accommodate the students at their newly assigned building. This option was deemed the best option due to
a variety of reasons; no additional cost for staffing in administration,
secretarial, specials, custodial and busing.
Transportation to an additional building would also not increase; this
would have occurred if we re-opened Medway or pursued community schools.
The initial cost associated with this program, moving of
staff over the summer, will be outweighed immediately by the savings incurred
by not fully opening an additional building.
It was deemed this approach would be best for the community also, due to
the cost savings of accommodating all-day every-day kindergarten into our
current building structure.
