Learning For All ~ Whatever It Takes!

Donnelsville Offers Tutoring for Third Grade Testing

Donnelsville Elementary houses the 2nd and 3rd graders from the district. In the 3rd grade, we have the Third Grade Reading Guarantee (TGRG). This is a mandate from the state of Ohio that says all third graders must pass the state test in reading or an alternative test during their third grade year before they can move on to fourth grade. The students have a total of 5 chances to meet these requirements during their 3rd grade year.

After the fall state test is given, we offer tutoring to students who did not pass the fall test. The tutoring lasts for about 8 weeks. We have about 10 staff members that meet with students twice a week, either in the morning or after school, for tutoring. Teachers specifically work on comprehension skills with both fiction and non-fiction texts. The students explore text in a small group setting and are able to ask questions and see examples of quality answers. The teachers model good answers and how to prove your answers using information from the text.

Tutoring for our students is paid for by Title I funds. It is an extra thing we do here at Donnelsville to help our kids succeed. The dedication of the staff and students to attend these tutoring sessions is to be applauded. Our hope is that every student at Donnelsville is able to move on to 4th grade at the end of the year. Extra instruction for these students who have not yet met the requirements of the TGRG is so beneficial to our kids and their growth.
