Superintendent: New Initiatives Support Academic Achievement
From the Superintendent’s Desk:

One of the primary goals in any school district is to improve the academic performance of the students. This year district personnel have implemented three initiatives that should help to meet that important goal. The addition of more technology devices (Chromebooks and iPads) for student use has helped, and the transition to Google Apps for Education has also proven to be a definite plus for students and staff. Every day more and more teachers are using the Google applications to enhance teaching and learning in their classroom.

In addition, some teachers in each elementary school have completed a two-year pilot program to determine the next K-5 English/Language Arts/Reading program. The 2017-18 school year will be the first year of the implementation of the “Wonders” English/Language Arts/Reading program being utilized in all three elementary schools. The program offers some terrific online resources that can be used at home all year by students and parents/guardians.

Finally, personnel utilized Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA Maps) assessments in grades 1-8 to assist teachers to determine how well students (individually or collectively) are mastering coursework. The assessments are given three times during the year, and students complete the assessments online. Since it’s an online assessment, results are available within 24 hours. Teachers analyze the results, and based upon that analysis, make changes in their lesson planning and teaching. The teachers are getting better and better at analyzing the assessment data, and the hope is that this will continue to be a positive initiative for the district. These assessments are also supposed to be excellent predictors of how the students will score on the required state assessments. That information will be available soon!

District personnel will continue to utilize these initiatives in order to lead to increased student learning, achievement and success. If you ever want to discuss academics, curriculum or any other aspect of the district, please contact me via telephone (937-845-3576) or email ([email protected]). Thank you for your continued cooperation and support!
