Learning For All ~ Whatever It Takes!

Child Nutrition Department Meets State, Federal Guidelines

There has been much discussion about school breakfast and lunch in the news. Most people do not know the guidelines that shape the menus and serving sizes at each building.

The Tecumseh Child Nutrition department goes above and beyond each day to make sure our hungry students are offered the most nutritious meals possible while staying compliant with the guidelines. All students may take all required components at each meal service. For breakfast that is a whole grain item, milk and fruit or vegetable. At lunch we offer a whole grain, protein, fruit, vegetable and milk.

We also have a share table in all buildings for sharable items from students who don't want a component they are required to take for the meal to be reimbursable. This saves food from being thrown away and offers extra servings for students who may want it.

Serving sizes are limited by size and calorie counts. We also must count the calories and sodium content of condiments we serve so those as well are limited in size. We do offer a la carte items each day in most buildings but those must meet federal smart snack guidelines as well as the state’s SB210 guidelines.
