From the Superintendent's Desk: Encourage Students to Speak Up for Safety
From the Superintendent’s Desk

On January 22, one student was injured in a shooting at a high school in Italy, Texas; the next day, two students were killed and 15 were injured during a Kentucky high school shooting.  These incidents shake the communities where they occur, and they prompt everyone to wonder why they occur and if they could have been prevented.  Often, witnesses will say, “I didn’t think that would ever happen here.”  A year ago a shooting occurred at West Liberty High School approximately 45 minutes away.  In February 2016 a shooting took place in Butler County at Madison Jr.-Sr. High School.  No community or school is immune from a tragedy like this occurring.

The purpose behind my attention to this topic is to ask each of you to have a conversation with your children.  Tell them how important it is to tell someone if they EVER see or hear any threats being made…even if they think the person is not serious.  Tell them to report it if they see anything threatening on social media.  If school personnel know about the threats, they can investigate and possibly avoid a tragedy; they will also involve law enforcement to assist in the investigation.

Students who feel good about their school experiences are far less likely to engage in destructive, criminal behavior at school; consequently, school personnel do their best to establish positive relationships with all students.  It is our sincere hope that every student has at least one school employee with whom he/she feels comfortable working and communicating.  It’s also helpful for students to be involved in some type of an extracurricular activity.  In that way students experience a positive and enjoyable link to school apart from academics.  These proactive steps can reduce or eliminate negative feelings that a student might have toward school or school personnel.
