We are having a great year. While we had some adjustments to make at the beginning of the year with all kindergarten and first graders in the building, things are running very smoothly at this time. Students have adjusted well to their new surroundings, know their bus(es), understand what's expected of them behaviorally, and are learning each day. Thanks to everyone who attended Parent Teacher Conferences in mid-February. It was a great opportunity to collaborate on each child's performance. If you missed your conference, please make contact with your child's teachers through phone or email.
Each morning, we broadcast our announcements live on televisions throughout the building on our network. In addition, we tape those announcements and post them to the web via YouTube so that parents and grandparents can also keep updated on what's happening at school. Follow the links for the date you'd like to view under "Morning Announcements". From there you can subscribe to our daily announcements and will receive an email from YouTube each time a new video is uploaded. This will allow you to keep current on the happenings at school. Students participate in announcements by announcing the lunch, weather and recess status each day. In addition, students are featured on announcements on their birthdays. In addition, some days we add photos or videos from special events like our Fall Parade and Parties and the PBS Reward Days.
On Fridays, each classroom selects one "Hot Ticket" winner from the classroom to be recognized on announcements. Students earn "Hot Tickets" by being respectful, responsible, peaceful, problem-solving learners as part of our Positive Behavior Support system. Students can earn these tickets from any adult throughout the building. Students may get a ticket for helping out a classmate in the cafeteria, for following the rules by walking in the hallway on the right side, for answering a difficult question in class, etc.
We are looking forward to our next PBS reward coming up the first of March. PBS stands for Positive Behavior Supports. Students having "good days" on 80% of the school days or more, can attend the monthly reward. The next reward will be "Minute to Win It".
Students and staff alike are working hard to ensure that all of our students are reaching their full potential. First grade students are reading everyday and striving to learn all 284 Dolch sight words and to reach a reading level of 16 or greater. Kindergarten students need to learn 27 kindergarten sight words as well as all letter names and sounds. Most students are well on their way to reaching these goals.
Finally, we have two volunteer programs. Kids' Hope is a mentoring program which pairs students up with a community mentor to provide additional emotional and academic support to students. We would like to thank the 10 members of the Heritage Fellowship Church who are each volunteering an hour a week to benefit a student in our building. We have also secured several volunteers to help students with their reading through a program called Project M.O.R.E. If you have just 30 minutes a week, you too can help a youngster learn to read.
